Origami & Fragrance

‘Golden Icarus’

Exhibition: 18.05 – 01.07.2022

THE PROJECT

A fragrance created in collaboration between the Romanian artist Cristian Marianciuc and French perfumer-creator Marie Urban Le Febvre.

‘Golden Icarus’ was born out of a desire to create a token that would represent a temporary truce between forces that are usually at odds with each other. Given that Cristian’s moniker is IcarusMidAir, Greek mythology was a straightforward choice for the setting. The forces at odds with each other here are Icarus and the sun. ‘Golden Icarus’ embodies an unexpected moment of stillness and of serenity, where Icarus’ violent descent is observed with new eyes and where the sun is no longer a foe. The scorching gold coexists with the ocean blue and the waxy beige. Wings remain intact, the sun is not too hot and the sea is not too cold. This is a moment of bliss, frozen in time and in midair, with no recollection of what came before or of what is about to happen.

Above all, ‘Golden Icarus’ is an invitation to stop, even if just for a moment, and to try to take in the magnificent beauty of all that surrounds us.

‘When art meets perfume’, is a concept of artistic dialogues between the French in house perfumer-creator Marie Urban Le Febvre and local and international artists.

BIOGRAPHY:

Cristian Marianciuc is a paper artist from Romania. His work revolves around the traditional origami crane. Since 2014 he has been perfecting his very personal style which sees the humble yet beautifully symbolic traditional model of the crane come alive with the help of intricately cut wings, flowers, folkloric motifs, and other decorative paper elements.

In 2020 Cristian turned his attention to the world of perfume in his constant search for sources of inspiration. The resulting project, “Olfactory Peregrinations”, aims to give physical shapes to fragrances: they are assigned colours, a “body” , stories and music to name just a few of the elements that are part Cristian’s artistic olfactory universe. Each of these paper sculptures is meant to serve as a travel companion on the multi-layered and multi-sensory journey proposed by the artist.
